The setting
The restaurant sits in the crypt below St George’s, the 18th-century church on Hanover Square, in the space that was previously Aldo Zilli’s Undercroft. Meat fridges with whole carcasses and dry-aged cuts take centre stage in the dining room, with counter seats looking over the prep area. The name is adapted from the Hebrew Eleazar, meaning “God has helped”.
What to eat
Zakuski and starters
Start with zakuski, rye open sandwiches with butter, topped with herring, pork cheek, anchovy or caviar. Caviar is a big part of the menu. Hot and cold starters include pierogi and mackerel tartare.
Mains: £28
Grilled meat and fish mains are all £28. Dishes include a tuna ribeye on the bone, a Dingley Dell pork chop with smoked parsnip, and Denver and picanha steaks. Premium cuts such as ribeye and T-bone appear as daily specials.
Sides
Sauerkraut, hasselback potatoes with garlic and dill, tomato salad and bitter leaves.
Drinks
The bar leans into Eastern Europe: a pickle Martini, a Fernet Spritz, a Czech house beer and vodka-based cocktails using spirits from Poland, Hungary, Serbia and Ukraine. Head of wine Merlin Ramos (formerly of Humo and Town) has put together a list of six themed wine “journeys”, and there’s house claret on tap.
Who’s behind it
Misha Zelman co-founded Goodman, the steak restaurant group, and Burger & Lobster, and runs Zelman Meats. Head chef Erik Miotto has cooked at Cycene and Akoko, and David Bury consults on the menu.
Good to know
- At £28 for a main, it’s good value for Mayfair, especially the sharing-style starters
- Regent Street’s Christmas lights are a few minutes away, lit from 5 November

- For a different steak night, Edmondo at Bank opens on 6 November with spice-crusted Philip Warren steaks
How to order at Elezar
The menu is built for sharing at the start and ordering individually for mains. A simple way to approach it:
- Order a few zakuski for the table, one per person
- Add one hot starter such as the pierogi
- Pick a £28 main each, or share a premium cut from the specials board
- Two sides are usually enough for two people: the hasselback potatoes and sauerkraut are the obvious pair
- Try the pickle Martini if you’re curious, or the house claret on tap for something simple

About St George’s, Hanover Square
St George’s was built in the 1720s by John James and is one of the best-known society wedding churches in London. Handel worshipped here and lived nearby on Brook Street, where his house is now the Handel Hendrix House museum. It’s worth a look inside before or after dinner if the church is open.
