The best art exhibitions in London this winter (2026 to 2027)

Van Eyck, Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant, Frida Kahlo and the Winston Taylor portrait prize: London’s big exhibitions this winter.

Tate Britain on Millbank, London

This winter is a strong one for London galleries. Four big shows are on between now and spring, from Van Eyck at the National Gallery to Frida Kahlo at Tate Modern. Here’s what’s on, when, and what it costs where we know.

Van Eyck: The Portraits, National Gallery

21 November 2026 to 11 April 2027. All ten surviving portraits by Jan van Eyck together for the first time, including the Arnolfini Portrait. More in our Van Eyck guide.

Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant: Inside Bloomsbury, Tate Britain

12 November 2026 to 11 April 2027, daily 10am to 6pm. More than 300 works by the two Bloomsbury artists: paintings, furniture, ceramics and textiles, the hand-painted Famous Women Dinner Service, and a restaging of their studio at Charleston, moved to London while Charleston is being conserved. Visitors aged 16 to 25 can get in for £5 with Tate Collective.

Frida Kahlo: The Making of an Icon, Tate Modern

Until 3 January 2027. The last few weeks of the summer’s biggest show. More than 130 works, including self-portraits, clothes and jewellery, plus a room on how her image spread through fashion and film. Tickets are £25. Book ahead for December, when it gets busy before it closes.

Winston Taylor Photo Portrait Prize, National Portrait Gallery

5 November 2026 to 17 January 2027. The annual portrait photography prize, formerly known as the Taylor Wessing prize, with the shortlisted and selected portraits on show.
