Christmas shopping in London 2026: where to go, when it’s quieter and what’s new

Where to do your Christmas shopping in London in 2026, from Oxford Street and Regent Street to the markets and fairs, with dates and tips for avoiding the crowds.

Christmas lights over Regent Street at night

The short version: for big shops, head to Oxford Street and Regent Street, where the UK’s largest Harry Potter shop opens on 4 November and the Regent Street lights switch on on 5 November. For independent makers, go to the Spirit of Christmas Fair at Olympia (2 to 8 November) or the Christmas markets. Shop on a weekday morning if you can. Black Friday is on 27 November.

This guide covers where to shop, what’s new this year, the key dates, and practical tips for getting it done without the stress. All dates are checked against the organisers and a second source.

The West End: Oxford Street, Regent Street and Carnaby

Oxford Street

The big news this year is the Harry Potter Shop Oxford Street, opening on 4 November at The Ribbon, 134 to 140 Oxford Street, near Tottenham Court Road. It’s the UK’s largest official Harry Potter shop, with more than 21,000 sq ft over two floors, a full-size Knight Bus and a Butterbeer café. Expect queues in the first weeks. See our Harry Potter shop guide.

Oxford Street’s Christmas lights are expected to have a Harry Potter theme this year, but the switch-on date hadn’t been announced when we last checked.

Regent Street and Carnaby

Regent Street’s Spirit of Christmas angels switch on on 5 November, with a free evening event from 5pm to 9pm. Carnaby, just off Regent Street, lights up on 4 November and is good for independent fashion and smaller brands. Our Christmas lights walk links them all.

Fairs and markets for independent gifts

Spirit of Christmas Fair, Olympia

More than 600 independent brands, from Monday 2 to Sunday 8 November. Open 10am to 6pm most days, until 9pm on Thursday and 5pm on Sunday. Adult tickets start at around £26 and under-12s go free. Monday to Wednesday are calmest. See our Spirit of Christmas Fair guide.

Christmas markets

Leicester Square opens first, then the Southbank Centre Winter Market on 2 November, with Covent Garden, London Bridge City and Kingston following on 12 November. Almost all are free to walk into. Our Christmas markets guide has every date.

Black Friday and the sales

Black Friday is on 27 November and Cyber Monday on 30 November, with many shops starting offers a week earlier. Not every “deal” is real: price comparison site PriceSpy says discounts average 20 to 25%, but some items cost more on the day. Check the price history before you buy. Our Black Friday 2026 guide explains how.

When to go: avoiding the crowds

  • Weekday mornings are the calmest time on Oxford Street and Regent Street
  • Avoid Saturday afternoons in December if you can
  • Thursday evenings are a good compromise if you work during the day
  • Go early in the season. November is calmer than December, and stock is better

Getting around

Oxford Circus is the busiest station in the West End at Christmas and sometimes closes its entrances briefly to manage crowds. Bond Street, Tottenham Court Road and Piccadilly Circus are good alternatives, and the Elizabeth line stops at Bond Street and Tottenham Court Road.

Christmas shopping on a budget

  • Set a budget per person before you go
  • Look at independent stalls for one-off gifts at fair prices
  • Experiences make good gifts: a show, a skate or a light trail. See Christmas shows and ice skating
  • Use the free parts of London to make a day of it. See free things to do in London
