Free gardens at Hampton Court, a beer festival in Walthamstow, affordable art on Brick Lane, and the half marathon to plan around.
A quieter weekend than the last few, but there is plenty on. Here are the things we would actually go to, with a mix of free and paid, central and further out.
Free garden day at Hampton Court Palace
On Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 October the formal gardens at Hampton Court are free to walk around. That includes the Great Fountain Garden, the Privy Garden, the Kitchen Garden and the Pond Garden. The palace itself, the Maze and the Magic Garden playground still need a paid ticket. Some areas can be closed on the day, so check Historic Royal Palaces before you set off.
Harvestfest on the Blackhorse Beer Mile, Walthamstow
On Saturday from midday, ten breweries and bars along the Blackhorse Beer Mile throw an autumn party with live music, Morris dancers and a country theme. Entry is free. An evening party at Signature Brew is ticketed separately.
The Other Art Fair, Brick Lane
More than 100 independent artists sell their work at the Truman Brewery until Sunday. It is aimed at people buying their first original piece, so prices start well below gallery level. Open 11am to 7pm on Saturday and 11am to 6pm on Sunday.
New Scientist Live at ExCeL
A science festival with talks, hands-on exhibits and well-known scientists, running 10am to 5pm on Saturday and Sunday. Day and weekend tickets are on sale through the organisers. The nearest station is Custom House on the Elizabeth line and DLR.
The 90s at Tate Britain
Edward Enninful’s exhibition on 1990s art and fashion opened this week. Tickets are £22, or £5 for 16 to 25-year-olds. Our full guide is here.
Free on Saturday
- Local London Guiding Day: free guided walks led by qualified local guides in King’s Cross, the City, Hoxton, Waterloo and Pimlico, 10am to 4pm.
- Afternoon poems at Keats House, Hampstead: free, Sunday at 2:15pm.
- Welcome Home family day at the William Morris Gallery, Walthamstow: free design activities for ages 4 and up, Saturday 1pm to 4pm.
Getting around: the Royal Parks Half Marathon
On Sunday morning the Royal Parks Half Marathon runs through Hyde Park, Green Park, St James’s Park and Kensington Gardens, past Buckingham Palace and Parliament. Expect road closures and busy buses across central and west London until early afternoon. If you are driving into the centre on Sunday, plan around it.
Also worth knowing: westbound Piccadilly and District line trains are not stopping at Barons Court until November, and the Waterloo and City line is closed at weekends as usual.
